A furious row between An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams led to the suspension of the Dáil for a period this afternoon.

It developed after Mr. Kenny under pressure about budget cuts challenged Mr. Adams over the disappearance of Jean McConville.

"I would love to hear you speak the truth about some elements of your past" Mr. Kenny told Mr. Adams.

"You might some day tell the truth about the tragedy and the remorse and about the compassion that should have been shown for Jean McConville. Maybe you might do that, Deputy Adams."

Immediately Gerry Adams took to his feet and demanded the Taoiseach retract what he said.

But as the Taoiseach refused the Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett intervened and told Deputy Adams to "resume his seat".

After he persisted the Ceann Comhairle was left with no choice but to suspend the sitting allowing all parties to cool off.
