Warnings
Three weather warnings have been issued by Met Éireann for heavy rain and wind.
A yellow “be aware” rain alert is in place in counties Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford until 6am tomorrow morning. 25 to 50 millimetres of rainfall is expected, with the heaviest falls in mountainous areas.
A more serious orange “be prepared” warning applies for Cork where up to 70mm will fall. It will be heaviest along the coast and there will also be high tides.
A yellow wind warning is also in place for all of Munster as well as Wexford, Galway and Mayo. Easterly winds will reach mean speeds up to 65 km per hour, they will be strongest along the south coast. That alert is valid until this evening.
Today
A cold start across the country with frost and any icy patches prevalent in the morning. Rain will be widespread and heavy in the south of the country with the risk of flooding along the coast. This rainfall will extend northwards as far as Connacht and the southern half of Leinster before clearing back to the southwest again during the afternoon.
There will be some sunshine across Ulster today and it will be largely dry there. Highest temperatures will be between seven and 10 degrees. The lower temperatures in Munster where the rain may turn to sleet over hills and mountains. Winds will be easterly and will be fresh to strong along southern coasts.
Tonight
Rain will become widespread in the south again tonight and will extend northwards to all areas, becoming broken and turning to showers overnight. Lowest temperatures will be between three and five degrees with fresh breezes.
