Cold this morning with some icy patches but these will clear soon after dawn and it will be a bright day with sunny spells. There will be some showers in the morning, mainly in the north and east of the country, but it will become mostly dry in the afternoon.

Highest temperatures of only 6 to 9 degrees in light to moderate northerly or variable breezes. In the evening it will become very cold soon after dark with air temperatures falling below freezing by 9pm in some areas.

Tonight

Clear skies and near calm conditions tonight will lead to widespread sharp to severe frost with ice forming on untreated damp roads and paths. There is also a risk of patches of freezing fog.

Lowest temperatures between 0 and -3 degrees in most areas but a few degrees above freezing in coastal areas.

Later in the night cloud will increase in western counties in freshening southwesterly winds.
