Research and innovation into ways to make condoms safer and more accessible is an ongoing process, and as a part of that, student Michele Chu has come up with a brand new take on the tried and tested formula.

Speaking to PSFK design blog, Chu said that she "thought the condom market needed some refreshing [...] They've just been these square things forever", and that bringing another, alternative way to make safe sex products better and more convenient on to the market couldn't be a bad thing.

The design features an aerosol can that would spray the liquid condom on, and is an advancement on the prototype that was designed by German scientist scientist Jan Vinzenz Krause in 2008. That failed to catch on as it involved the use of a metal or plastic tube that sprayed the condom on through a series of jets, and took several minutes to dry, but Chu's design promises to be different.

There are still some issues that need to be addressed, however, as the issues surrounding the condom's safety and how it can protect the spread of STIs are paramount to the development of the product, while the issue of how long it would take to dry is still unresolved.

Chu has plans to release the condom, along with another of other innovations to the market in the coming years, with her company Girlplay, "aimed at bold and daring women". The full "lovers' kit" includes the spray-on condoms, the regular kind of condoms, and another of her inventions, the "smartbra" that can be controlled with a remote control.
