An earthquake in the Pacific Ocean has sent shockwaves as far as Tokyo.

The 7.8 magnitude quake hit deep under water this morning (at around 18.30 local time, or 11.30am Irish time), around 874km off the Japanese coast.

Buildings on the mainland were shaken, but there are no reports of serious injuries or damage so far.

There are also no fears of a tsunami.
