Around 40 people have been injured in a stampede after firecrackers created panic at a French Riviera resort, according to reports.

The AFP news agency said the firecrackers were mistaken last night for the sound of gunfire, causing people to run for safety.

They had been thrown from a car in the town of Juan-les-Pins, AFP said, adding that police were studying CCTV footage to confirm what happened.

Footage from the incident showed chairs and table settings strewn on the ground, with screaming heard in the background.

The fire service in Juan-les-Pins, which lies between Nice and Cannes, said 41 people were “lightly injured”.

The stampede came in the wake of a string of terror attacks in France, including the Nice truck attack on Bastille Day that killed 85 people and injured dozens others.
