There is speculation over the future of a number of figures in the justice system this morning as the fallout from the Guerin report continues.

It comes amid reports that the government is poised to begin a major clearout of the Department of Justice for its failure to properly investigate allegations of garda misconduct.

The position of head of the Garda Ombudsman is under scrutiny over delays in passing on material to the Guerin investigation - while the Secretary-General at the Department of Justice is also under increasing pressure.

Special Correspondent with the The Irish Examiner Mick Clifford says the future of Brian Purcell could be made clear in the coming days.

Meanwhile the Tanaiste says the new Justice Minister is determined to deal with complaints about gardaí quickly.

The comments from Eamon Gilmore follow the news that the Taoiseach has handed over a fresh batch of complaints to Francis Fitzgerald. Minister Fitzgerald is less than a week in office and is now investigating almost 30 affidavits and other documents.

Eamon Gilmore says he is confident she will change the way that complaints are dealt with.
