Venezuela has joined Ecuador in saying they'll give fugitive whistleblower Edward Snowden asylum in their country.

The Russian President has confirmed US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden is still in a Moscow airport transit zone.

Vladimir Putin has also rejected calls for his extradition to the United States describing him as a 'free man'. In his first comments about the case Putin said the former CIA agent's arrival in Moscow from Hong Kong was "completely unexpected" for the Russian authorities.

Snowden's been evading US authorities since leaking revelations of massive US surveillance programmes to the media. He's believed to be in the transit area at Moscow airport.

The White House is still trying to secure his arrest and extradition from there to face espionage charges - but the Russians are refusing to detain him.

Wikileak’s supporter, journalist, writer and documentary maker John Pilger says Snowden is likely to be taking his time before making a final decision on where to go next:

Reporter Ian Woods is in Moscow - and says it's thought Mr Snowden is staying in a pod-style hotel room:
