A man is due in court this afternoon charged by Gardai investigating the discovery of a body in the water off Slieve League in County Donegal.

The body of a man in his 60s was recovered from the water off the Donegal cliffs on July 3rd after a week-long search operation.

Gardaí involved in the search were investigating an alleged assault that reportedly took place in the Slieve League/Killybegs area between Saturday, June 24th, 2023, and Sunday, June 25th.

After the body was recovered, a post-mortem was carried out; however, the results were not released for operational reasons.

A man and a woman were arrested early on in the investigation; however, they were released without charge with a file to be prepared for the DPP.

Yesterday a man in his 30s was re-arrested and questioned at a Garda station in the Northwestern region.

He has now been charged and is due to appear before a special sitting of Ballyshannon District Court at 4pm this afternoon.

Slieve League or Sliabh Liag is a mountain on the Donegal coast that boasts some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe.

The area was shot off to tourists for around a week while the search was ongoing.
