Sky News presenter Kay Burley will 'step back' from her broadcasting role for six months after breaching COVID-19 guidelines.

The news station's political editor Beth Rigby and correspondent Inzamam Rashid will also be off air for three months.

The three broadcasters attended a social event in London over the weekend, during which Sky News says there were breaches of COVID-19 guidelines.

Mrs Burley said she'd agreed to step back for a 'period of reflection' following an internal review.

She said in a statement: "It doesn't matter that I thought I was COVID-compliant on a recent social event. The fact is I was wrong, I made a big mistake, and I am sorry.

"Some dear friends and colleagues - some of the most talented and committed professionals in our business - have been pulled into this episode and I regret this enormously."

Earlier this week, the broadcaster said she'd been out on Saturday celebrating her 60th birthday at a COVID compliant restaurant.

However, she says she later in the evening 'briefly popped into another restaurant' as she was 'desperate for the loo' while waiting for a taxi.

She admitted to having 'inadvertently broken the rules' during the incident.

Earlier this year, Mrs Burley told Newstalk that the COVID-19 crisis is something nobody could have expected, and politicians are making "life or death decisions all the time".

She said she had some sympathy for politicians making 'life or death decisions', but that her job is to challenge them and hold them to account.
