Skating the Wild Atlantic Way for suicide awareness

Many people travel parts of the Wild Atlantic Way, but Becky Gilmour is skateboarding the entire route. 

The skating enthusiast is raising awareness for suicide, inspired by a close friend she lost.

"We used to skateboard together in Portrush by the sea," she said.

“I wanted a way to process that pain and those emotions. I feel like we don’t talk about suicide enough.”

Speaking on Moncrieff, she explained, “The official route is 2,600 or 700 kilometres, but I’m doing around 3,000."

 “I’ve been paddleboarding to about half of the islands that are on the route, and then I’m also skateboarding to as many of the islands as I can.”

The journey has been physically demanding.

“Sometimes it literally looks like walking, but you’ve got one foot on a board,” she admitted. 

“The downhills in the rain are terrifying. I tend to foot brake, but it means I’ve gone through shoes really quickly."

On an average day, she covers about 50 kilometres, taking five to six hours, often stopping “to chat to people along the way.”

Winter conditions and a chest infection have added extra challenges to the skaters journey. 

“Being unwell and being out in the cold has definitely been tough," Gilmour told the show.

"There’s been times where I’ve been waking up in the night because I’m struggling to breathe,” she said.

Despite this, the kindness of strangers has kept her going:

“Recently I haven’t had to carry [my backpack] so much, which I’m really, really grateful for.”

With just 150 kilometres to go to Portrush, the finish line is near. 

“I’m having people come out and join me now, which is amazing, we’re hoping to do a big finish line so everyone can come down and join for the last stretch."

"No matter how they want to do it, walk, cycle or skate, we’ll get everyone involved.”
