Sinn Féin has welcomed the news that whistleblower Maurice McCabe has regained access to the Garda 'Pulse' computer system, and said it is "long overdue".

Sinn Féin spokesperson Padraig Mac LochLainn told Newstalk he believes the decision should have been made sooner and it should now be expected that Sergeant McCabe will receive full support from his senior colleagues in the force.

“It’s long overdue and it’s very welcome. I spoke to Maurice a few days ago and he expressed his ongoing concern. He’d made another complaint about it at that stage.

“What we need to see now is also full support given to Maurice by his senior colleagues, that is their legal responsibility,” Mac LochLainn said.

Interim Garda commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan informed newly appointed Minister for Justice Frances FItzgerlad last night that McCabe’s access to the system had been restored with immediate effect.

McCabe’s access to the system was restricted in December 2012 following his coming forward with allegations of serious misconduct and corruption within the force.
