Sinn Féin is vowing to fight water charge legislation tooth and nail, but the party admits the government has the numbers to force it through.

The coalition is putting through laws that mean landlords will have to pay the charges if tenants leave without doing so.

Another bill on Friday will allow people who mount up €500 in unpaid charges be taken to court so the money can be deducted from wages, welfare or pensions.

The measures also include that a person cannot sell their property unless water bills are paid.

Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald says these laws will not change people's minds who have decided not to pay the charges.

Landlords are "being handed a poison chalice" with the new legislation, according to  spokesperson for the Residential Landlords Association of Ireland, Fintan McNamara.

In the event of having a tenant, particularly a long-term tenant, who does not pay "It does seem as if the only option may be to give tenants a warning to pay these charges or face eviction," he told Newstalk Breakfast yesterday.

The landlords have rejected the idea of taking Irish Water debts from tenants' deposits.

"hat is a possibility but we are against that...because you would have to treble a deposit...that is something that won't work", he added.
