We are starting to get a better idea of how a new-look Dublin City Council is shaping up. Three of the electoral wards have now been filled but there is still a long way to go.

After hours of sorting and counting votes yesterday, Sinn Fein's Daithi Doolan was the first past the post.

Since then, he has been joined by 14 party colleagues in a major coup for Gerry Adams and his party.

But for every winner, there has to be a loser and the political charge of Sinn Fein has left dozens of fallen Fine Gael and Labour candidates in its wake.

So far, Enda Kenny has only returned two troops while Labour's haul of three is a far cry from the commanding 18 seats they held in the previous chamber.

Out-going Labour Lord Mayor Oisin Quinn was one of the more spectacular casualties, as he saw his vote completely collapse in Rathgar-Rathmines.

Over half of the 63 seats have now been filled but there is still a long way to go and the little matter of electing Dublin representatives in Europe is still a work in progress.
