A man in his 70s has been taken to hospital after a "serious assault" in a parking lot in County Cork.

Gardaí said the man was taken by ambulance to to Cork University Hospital with "serious injuries" after the incident in Sleaveen East in Macroom in the early hours of this morning.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and he is being held at Bandon Garda Station.

Gardaí said the scene has been preserved, with a technical examination due to take place later today.

Investigators are calling for any witnesses to the incident to contact Gardaí.
