Up to two million Catalans took to the streets of Barcelona yesterday, in a rally ahead of an independence referendum in November.

A reported two million demonstrators formed a giant V in the red and yellow colours of the region’s flag, symbolising ‘vote’. September 11th is also the regional holiday of Catalonia, La Diada, and Catalans came out is massive numbers.

Local political leaders say that Catalonia is economically, socially, and politically better off as an independent state. But authorities in Madrid say the planned November 9th vote is unconstitutional, and will be blocked.
