Secret police files in the lead up to the 1916 Rising are being published for the first time from today.

The documents detail the monitoring of more than 230 people whom officers suspected of being involved in planning a revolt.

The Movement of Extremists documents are being made available weekly by the National Archives on their website, consisting of a series of daily reports.

The reports were put together by Superintendent Owen Brien, and then submitted to the Under Secretary for Ireland Sir Matthew Nathan.

A number of key events are recorded in the documents, including the funeral of the Fenian leader Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa at the start of August 1915 and the Annual Convention of Irish Volunteers on 31st October 1915.

Individuals frequently mentioned in the reports include Thomas Byrne, Con Colbert, Seán T Ó Ceallaigh and Seán Mac Diarmada, while the National Archive website states that "the primary person of interest is Thomas J Clarke, who is mentioned in almost every report".
