Scientists working to unpick the relationship between neural activity in an animal's brain and the way it behaves have made a stunning film of an animal's nervous system in action.

The video shows neurons firing off at high speed, and in full colour.

The Engineers, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Sciences professionals who worked on it hope it could help us unlock the mysteries of animal behaviour.

The neural activity in the film is shown as yellow and red movement in the grey nervous system of a fruit fly crawling backwards.

The images were taken from a high-speed simultaneous multi-view microscope while tissues were probed under MRI scans and EEG, tests that are commonly run in hospitals.

And just so you know, this kind of science is the study of connectomics!
