Today
A very cold start today, with patchy mist frost and ice only slowly clearing through the morning.
It will be dry in many places with winter sunshine, but there will be further hail and snow showers in parts of the north and northwest with snow lying this morning.
Some wintry showers will also affect parts of the west and southwest but these will turn to rain.
Highest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees Celsius in moderate northwest backing westerly winds.
Tonight
Frost will set in quickly this evening and will turn sharp or severe in midland and eastern areas early tonight as temperatures fall to -2 or -3 degrees Celsius.
But it should hold around 1 or 2 degrees in western and southwestern areas.
Cloud will thicken and west and southwest and winds will freshen as rain moves in off the Atlantic.
The rain will move eastwards overnight but will fall as sleet in places with some hill snow in some northern and northeastern areas.
