A man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of 14 people in a container in Wexford last week.

The discovery was made off a ferry from Belgium last Monday after a 999 call was made from inside the trailer.

The man, aged in his 30s, was detained this afternoon at Rosslare for an alleged offence under the Criminal Justice (Smuggling of Persons) Act.

He is being questioned at a Garda station in the southeast of the country under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardaí have said the investigation is ongoing.

Over half of those rescued from the shipping container are believed to have fled an asylum centre in Dublin last week.

The Department of Integration stated there is nothing requiring international protection applicants to remain in State-provided care.

Gardaí have also stated that it is not a matter for An Garda Síochána as the people involved were not arrested, detained or under criminal investigation.
