He'd been battling ill health and passed away early this morning
He was removed from office in a military coup in 2017 after spending 37 years in power.

Officials in the Bahamas say the number of people who've died from Hurricane Dorian has increased to 30.
The number is expected to be "significantly higher" over the next few days as crews continue search and rescue missions.
The UN estimates 70,000 people there need aid.
Dorian - which has been downgraded to category 2 - is currently moving along the eastern coast of the US, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the Carolinas.

There are calls for the Minister for Agriculture to fast track talks on the beef crisis.
Michael Creed has scheduled talks for Monday, but independent Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice is encouraging TDs from all parties to lobby for the talks to be brought forward to this afternoon.
Deputy Fitzmaurice says there appears to be a real will across all sides to find a resolution.
