Drivers are being warned to slow down and expect the unexpected as Storm Erik hits the country.

Strong winds are expected in parts of Donegal, Mayo and Galway - where a status orange wind warning is in place.

There is also a status yellow rainfall warning for Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Kerry - and a status yellow wind warning for the rest of the country.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is asking road users to exercise caution while using the roads.

In Mayo, Galway and Donegal winds will reach average speeds of 65 to 80 km/h with some severe or damaging gusts of 110 to 130 km/h.

The highest winds will be in exposed coastal areas, where these values may be exceeded.

There will also be very high seas with some coastal flooding.

For the rest of Ireland, winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65 km/h - with gusts of 80 to 110 km/h.

These values may be exceeded along exposed Atlantic coasts, with very high seas and a risk of coastal flooding.

The RSA is asking road users to check local weather and traffic conditions and be aware of the conditions before setting out on a trip.

It has the following advice for road users:

  • Beware of objects being blown out onto the road. Expect the unexpected
  • Watch out for falling/fallen debris on the road and vehicles veering across the road
  • Control of a vehicle may be affected by strong cross winds. High sided vehicles and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to strong winds

Drivers should also allow extra space allow between themselves and vulnerable road users - such as cyclists and motorcyclists - as they may be blown off course by strong winds.

Motorists should also drive with dipped headlights at all times

Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists should wear bright clothing with reflective armbands or a reflective belt.

They should also take extra care when crossing the road or cycling in extremely windy conditions, as a sudden gust of wind could blow them into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
