Road deaths rose by 19% in 2023, the RSA has confirmed.

In total, 184 people lost their lives in 173 fatal collisions, compared to 155 deaths in the whole 2022.

Speaking to Newstalk, RSA spokesperson David Martin described 2023 as a “very difficult one” for road safety.

“I think it’s worth noting that as a proportion nearly 80% were male,” he said.

“We’ve also seen the highest number of pedestrian fatalities since 2011 and it’s also worth noting around half occurred at night - despite lower traffic volumes - and around half occurred at the weekend.”

Of the 184 road deaths in 2023, 69 were drivers, 44 were pedestrians, 34 were passengers, 26 were motorcyclists, eight were cyclists and three were e-scooter users.

The highest number of deaths was recorded in Tipperary followed by Dublin, Cork, Galway and then Mayo.

Reform

Minister of State Jack Chambers said legislation to improve safety would soon be brought before the Oireachtas.

“The Road Traffic Bill received cabinet approval in December and we will be working to have this essential piece of legislation progressed through the Dáil in early 2024,” he said.

“Work is well underway on a number of other initiatives in partnership with other Government departments and agencies to be delivered throughout this year.

“I would also like to pay tribute and special thanks to our emergency services and first responders who do incredible lifesaving work in the most challenging circumstances.”

The bill is likely to mandate drug testing at the scene of a crash, penalty points reform and lower speed limits.
