The latest statistics on recorded crime show an increase in the number of homicides. The figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show there were 83 homicides in the year ending in the second quarter of this year.
That is up five on the same period last year. The number of kidnappings and related offences rose by 31.
However, there was a decrease in the number of sexual crimes recorded - and a drop in the number of weapons and explosives offences.
Meanwhile gardaí are warning homeowners that burglaries are more common in winter.
Break-ins tend to rise by about 25% in the winter months, with most taking place in darker evenings - with the majority happening between 5pm and 11pm.
In the 12 months to July, over €35m worth of property was stolen from Irish homes. Gardaí are advising householders to ensure doors and windows are locked.
Half of all burglaries in winter take place through the back of the house, while one in five burglars coming through an unsecured door or window.
