There have been 'riots' at Zimbabwe's annual 'Mister Ugly' contest, amid cheating accusations and claims the winner was 'too handsome'.

The winner was 42-year-old Milton Sere, who boasts numerous missing front teeth and a range of grotesque facial expressions.

However last year's champion William Masvinu and his supporters contested Sere's victory, with Masvinu suggesting "I am naturally ugly. He is not. He is ugly only when he opens his mouth".

Other contestants wondered whether they too had to lose to teeth to win the 'prestigious' title.

Associated Press reports that the complaints led to some 'rioting' at the event.

The news agency says that while nobody was injured, "there was a great deal of pushing and shoving as the results were announced" and insults were hurled at the judges.

The win saw Sere - who says he has been 'showcasing' his ugliness at local schools in a bid to win a TV contract - walk away with $500.
