Power has been restored on the Aran Islands, after a cable fault left residents with no electricity.

They had been without electricity or phone lines since early on Friday morning.

The power outages were caused by a fault in the under-water power cable supplying electricity to the islands.

Large back-up generators were brought out to the islands to temporarily restore power, however a transformer had to be leased from the UK.

According to ithe ESB PowerCheck website while power has been restored, a planned service interruption is taking place on Inisheer.
