Health regulators warn against buying COVID-19 tests online

Health regulators are warning people against buying COVID-19 tests online.

The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) said it has become aware of a number of fake tests being sold in Europe.

It said the tests are not certified and can provide incorrect results.

The regulator said it advising the public not to buy tests online or from any retailer.

It said the HSE uses in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVDs) to test for the virus which test samples taken from the body for the virus.

All samples are taken by health professionals.

The HPRA said all testing should be done in this manner to ensure that results are properly reported, contact tracing is carried out.

It said incorrect results may also provide false reassurance to people and convince them not to seek medical help. This could also lead to people unknowingly spreading the virus further.
