A man has appeared in court charged with attempting to sexually assault a young woman in Dublin in the early hours of yesterday morning.

James Donohoe (49) of Harold's Cross Road is also accused of assault causing harm to the woman (22) near Grosvenor Place in Rathmines at around 12.30am.

It is alleged the woman was grabbed from behind and dragged to the ground while walking on Effra Road.

Today in court Garda Ciaran O'Mahony gave evidence that Mr. Donohoe was arrested and charged at Terenure Garda Station last night.

He said he made no reply after caution to the assault charge but said 'I'm not going to plead to that' when the charge of attempted sexual assault was put to him.

Dublin District Court granted legal aid to Mr. Donohoe, who is on disability allowance. There was no application for bail.

The court heard he has been receiving psychiatric treatment while in garda custody.

Judge Michael Walsh directed that he is to continue to receive appropriate medical attention while on remand ahead of his next court appearance in Cloverhill on this day week.
