A court in Northern Ireland has fined Quinn Building Products £100,000 over a workplace accident in which a 24-year-old employee died.

The company was fined for health and safety breaches which led to the death of Brian Og Maguire, who played for the senior intercounty team. He died at a factory belonging to Quinn Building Products Ltd in September 2012.

He had been working with a steel rope when it snapped at one end causing him fatal injuries.

His parents, Brian and Eileen Maguire, said it was "an accident waiting to happen."

"The penalty imposed on the company responsible for the death of Brian Og is of very little relevance to us nor will it ease in any way the desperate situation we have been left in," they told the BBC.

"For them it may be over today, but for us it will go on forever. "

In August the company, who is under new ownership since the accident, pleaded guilty to two charges and today at Omagh Crown Court they were fined £50,000 for each one.

In a statement the company has expressed its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Brian Óg Maguire.

"Although not involved in the business at the time of accident, the company's directors accept the shortcomings that existed at that time.

"Brian's death remains a tragic loss to his family, his community and his work-colleagues, and he is sadly missed by all his friends throughout the business," they said.
