The HSE has warned people to be aware of a new contact tracing scam.

According to the executive, people are being contacted by phone or text message by scammers claiming to be contact tracing and testing staff.

The messages and calls claim the individual targeted has been identified as a close contact of someone with coronavirus, and then asks for bank details and money for a testing kit.

The HSE has insisted it does not charge the public for COVID-19 related services, and urged the public to ignore the scam text and calls.

In a statement, the executive said: "Any close contacts of a confirmed positive case of COVID-19 will be contacted by phone call by the Contact Tracing Team or Public Health Staff in the HSE and referred for a test. The HSE does not charge or ask for payment for testing.

"If the COVID-19 Tracker App has identified you as a close contact you will see a red box with the advice on what you should do next on all pages of the app.

"You will NEVER be asked for your bank details or to pay for testing by a member of HSE contact tracing staff."

Anyone who has received any suspicious contacts is being asked to contact the HSE on 1850-24-1850 and local gardaí.

The warning comes after the launch of the HSE's contact tracing 'COVID Tracker' app earlier this week.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly this evening said the app has been downloaded over 1.1 million times, and has already started detecting close contacts of confirmed new cases.
