The PSNI says a bomb found in Belfast last night was designed to kill or maim police officers and showed callous disregard for public safety.

Dozens of families were evacuated from their homes near Alliance Avenue in the north of the city, after police visiting the area to investigate reports that shots had been fired found a device at a home.

North Belfast Area Commander Chief Inspector Andrew Freeburn said it was a heinous act, and the community was very fortunate that no-one was killed or seriously injured.

"Those who carried out this heinous act have shown callous disregard for the safety of the local community and police officers... We are very fortunate this evening that no-one was killed or seriously injured as this occurred in a residential area, putting the lives of those who live here at serious risk. This is a blatant attempt to kill or maim police officers who were following up inquiries into reports received shots being fired in the area."

Chief Inspector Freeburn took the opportunity to restate the force's committment to carrying out a service across Norther Ireland despite a small minority who are intent on causing harm. He said those officers don't need the added pressure of individuals intent on doing them harm.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes at about 9 O'clock last night.

The PSNI are extremely keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious vehicles or activity in the area.
