Police in the North are investigating a possible explosion at an army base in County Down.

Officers were called to a fire in a post van at Palace Barracks in Holywood, which spread to two other vehicles and three nearby garages.

The cause has not been confirmed - but the PSNI say a suspected explosion is one line of enquiry.

North Down DUP MLA Gordon Dunne said an explosion would be "quite alarming especially given the considerable number of people currently stationed within the Barracks."

Mr Dunne added that he was "relieved that nobody was hurt or injured given the potential there was".
