A BBC presenter has won a sex discrimination equal pay claim against the British broadcasting organisation.

An Employment Tribunal panel has ruled Samira Ahmed - who hosts Newswatch - was not being paid fairly.

They compared her salary to that of Points Of View presenter Jeremy Vine.

Ms Ahmed was paid £465 (€550) per episode for hosting Newswatch - compared to Mr Vine receiving £3,000 (€3,530) for every edition of Points of View.

BBC had offered a number of defences in their response to the claim - including arguments over the level of audience recognition of the two presenters, as well as the respective profiles of the two different shows.

In a unanimous judgement, however, the tribunal judges found that BBC had "failed to discharge the burden on it under [equality legislation] and to rebut the presumption of sex discrimination that arose when [Ms Ahmed] proved that her work was like his work and that she was paid less than him."

Reacting to the judgement, Ms Ahmed said she was glad the case had been resolved.

In comments quoted by BBC News, she said: "No woman wants to have to take action against their own employer. I love working for the BBC."

She thanked the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and her legal team, as well as all the women and men who'd supported her.

Ms Ahmed noted: "I'm now looking forward to continuing to do my job, to report on stories and not being one."

The broadcasting corporation itself said Ms Ahmed was an excellent journalist and presenter, and regretted that the case had to go before a tribunal.

In a statement, it said: "We know tribunals are never a pleasant experience for anyone involved.

"We want to work together with Samira to move on in a positive way."

The BBC statement added: "We have always believed that the pay of Samira and Jeremy Vine was not determined by their gender.

"Presenters - female as well as male - had always been paid more on Points of View than Newswatch".
