A new poll on May's Same-Sex Marriage referendum shows the Yes side's lead has fallen.

The Ipsos MRBI poll in The Irish Times puts support for changing the constitution down six points at 74 per cent.

The No side, meanwhile, has gone up 6 to 26 per cent.

It's the first time support for extending marriage rights to gay couples has fallen since the question was first asked in the polls in 2012.

Simon Coveney spoke to Lunchtime today and he stated: "I think this is going to be a difficult campaign.

"I strongly believe that the right thing to do is vote Yes to extend the privilege, the rights and responsibilities that come with marriage.

"That privelege should be extended to everybody, whether you're same sex or whether you're not.

"Anybody who thinks this will be a walk in the park doesn't understand how politics works, referendums are always difficult, they're tight."
