It is easy to assume that languages are not one of our fortés given the way in which many people have struggling with Irish after 12 or 13 years of study.
And with European languages like French, Spanish and German not taught particularly well and not playing any prominent role, the assumption would be that Ireland is pretty monolingual.
But then again it is easy to forget that many people do study languages at university with some even taking part in study abroad programmes like ERASMUS and SOCRATES which encourage a healthy knowledge of European languages.
So how many languages do you speak apart from English?
And do you find that a knowledge of European languages is useful in Ireland? Leave your comments below.
