Some 22 families are to be housed in modular houses as early as Christmas after the Government signed off on a €40m investment in 500 units.
Environment Minister Alan Kelly said around 150 of the houses will be fast-track for delivery under a procurement process by early next year - with the remainder over 2016.
The announcement comes as figures from September show there are 3,428 adults and 1,571 children living in emergency accommodation across Ireland.
Of these, 738 are families, with the vast majority located in Dublin.
The modular units will be located across the four Dublin local authorities, and councils have been directed to use fast-track planning powers so the houses can be in place as soon as possible.
