As tens of thousands are expected to take part in the national protest against water charges this weekend, many still argue that paying for water makes sense.

Water is considered a commodity in other European countries and the US and paying for metered water services through a separate charge is normal.

While there has been much criticism of the Government's handling of the introduction of the charges, the question over whether we should be paying for a clean water supply still remains.
