Police in Thailand have given themselves a reward for arresting one of the men wanted in connection with the Bangkok bombings two weeks ago.

They have handed themselves three million baht - the equivalent of around €74,000 - for finding and detaining the man on Saturday.

National police chief Somyot Poompanmoung hopes the unusual step will motivate his officers and show that Thailand's law enforcers are good at their work:

The man was arrested over the weekend, with police saying they found a fake Turkish passport, many other passports and suspected bomb-making materials, including explosives and a detonator, at an apartment in the city.

A man seen in a CCTV video is believed to have carried out the bombing, which police said they believed was planned by a network.

However in a news conference on Saturday police instead said that the suspect they had arrested was not the bomber seen in the video.

"We believe he is a culprit in the same network. More details will be given later," a police spokesman said.

Arrest warrants have been issued for two more people in connection with the bombing.

The blast happened at 7pm (1pm Irish time) on 17th August near the Erawan Hindu shrine in the downtown Chidlom district - a shopping hub popular among tourists.

Many of the 20 people killed were tourists. At least 117 people were wounded, some of whom lost limbs.
