A missing light aircraft has been found crashed near a Scottish village.

The plane, believed to be carrying two people, had been due to land at Dundee airport at around midday on Sunday, but triggered an alert after it failed to arrive.

Police confirmed communication had been lost with the plane around four miles west of the airport.

Helicopters had been scouring the area, including the River Tay, while lifeboat crews and coastguard teams were also drafted in to assist in the search.

The plane was eventually found near the village of Abernyte, Perthshire.

No information has been made available about the condition of those on aboard.

A police statement said: "Police can confirm that following loss of contact with a light aircraft, believed to be carrying two people, due to land at Dundee airport at around midday today an aircraft has been located near to the village of Abernyte in Perthshire.

"Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene."

The plane is thought to have been flying from Inverness to Dundee.
