An American Airlines plane travelling from Phoenix to Boston in the US had to divert after the pilot fell ill and died.
His first officer was left to bring the aircraft safely down in New York State.
It was carrying 147 passengers. The airline says it is 'incredibly saddened' by what happened.
Flight 550 left Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and was due to land in Boston at 8am.
The plane ended up landing safely in Syracuse at about 7.10am.
It is believed the 57-year-old pilot, named as Phoenix-based Captain Michael Johnston, had been flying for more than 25 years.
"All of us at American extend our condolences to Mike's wife, Betty Jean, and to his entire family. They have lost a husband and father, and many of you have lost a personal friend," the airline said.
It is thought he died in flight of natural causes, but the investigation is on-going.
These people on board say it came as something of a surprise to them.
His wife B.J says she can take some comfort from the fact her husband was happy in his last moments.
