The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Egyptian authorities have extended the period of detention of four Irish citizens being held in Cairo.

The three Halawa sisters and their brother, who are from Firhouse in Dublin, have been held in custody there since a street protest last month by supporters of ousted president Morsi.
Its believed they can now be held for another 15 days.
Irish authorities are continuing to provide consular assistance to Halawa family.
