The mother of missing man Willie Maughan says she will continue to fight for justice until her last breath.

The 34-year-old was last seen in the Gormanston area of County Meath in April 2015.

Gardaí believe he was murdered alongside his 21-year-old girlfriend Anastasija Varslavanne; however, their remains have never been found.

On The Pat Kenny Show this morning, William’s parents Helen and Joe said they believe the couple were murdered because their son had information about the wrong people.

She said she has battled through a campaign of intimidation in the five years since she last saw them.

“For those five years, I never gave up,” she said.

“These people pipe bombed my daughter’s place to shut us up. They dug up my son’s grave to shut us up. They sent me threats; they told me what was going to happen to me if I didn’t keep away from the police and media

“When someone came to my house and gave me that message – I was bluntly told it – I just said, ‘you can go back and tell them that I’m going to fight for justice.’

“‘That is my child and that is Ana his girlfriend and I am going to fight for justice until the last blood in my body because they were murdered.

“Why should I sit back and just close the book? I’ve read the book and forget about it? I can’t do that.

“There have been two people murdered here and Ana was pregnant.

“I am doing it because I want to show these people that I am not backing down until we get justice for William and Ana – and until we get their bodies back.”

Gardaí are investigating whether Ana was raped before she was murdered and Helen said the rumours about the murders that have surfaced in the last few years are like “something that, if you saw it in a horror film you wouldn’t look at it.”

She said the couple “deserve a Christian burial” and pleaded with anyone who knows anything to come forward.

“Ana’s family back in Latvia need closure too,” she said. “Every time we are appealing for William, we are appealing for Ana too.

“Even an anonymous tip off no matter it is. There are people out there afraid to come forward. A lot of things would have change in five years and those people that know something would have a conscience.

“Even the people that did it have to have some kind of a conscience. They go to bed at night and get up in the morning. They have families and look at their own children.

“Even for someone to pick up the phone and give an anonymous phone call and tell us where the bodies are.

“Ana was 21-years-old, she was only a child. So, I think anyone that has information out there should just do the right thing and give us the closure we deserve.”

William’s father said he knows who carried out the murder.

“I met these people before my son was murdered at dinner in my house because my young lad was associating with them at the time,” he said.

“So, I shook hands with these people as any decent human being would – but I wish I never knew these people and I wish my son never knew these people.

“As I said from day one, my son wasn’t the perfect apple on the tree but he copped on to himself after so long and he broke away from them and this is the outcome.”

Three men and one woman arrested this week in connection with the investigation were last night released without charge.

A file is being prepared for the DPP.
