No pancreas transplants have been carried out in Ireland since the start of this year, after a surgeon who performs them retried.

David Hickey has performed every single one of the 118 transplants that have been performed in Ireland.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) says aftercare treatment is being moved from Beaumont Hospital to St Vincent's.

In a statement, the HSE says: "The pancreas transplant programme has been provided on a pilot basis by Beaumont Hospital since 1998".

Fiona Burke is a double transplant recipient from Co Galway - who had a kidney and pancreas transplant in 2002.

"The lack of communication is unreal, I was shocked actually" she told Newstalk Lunchtime.

Ms Burke said she was given no official announcement that the clinic was being shut down in Beamount - instead hearing it from other patients.

She was told she would have to go back to Galway for her after care.

But she told Newstalk Lunchtime there are concerns that Galway may not be able to deal with aspects of pancreas after care.
