Over €7,000 has been raised for two Ukraine refugees who had their car broken into while staying in emergency hotel accommodation in Dublin.

Olena Orman and her husband Anass arrived in Ireland almost two weeks ago after fleeing from Kyiv.

Ukraine refugees are currently being housed in hotels across the country and the couple have been staying in the Travelodge in Ballymun since their arrival.

In a post on GoFundMe, Olena said Ireland has been “nothing but good to us” since the couple arrived – until someone broke into their car in the underground carpark at the hotel on Thursday night.

She said the back window was smashed in and everything of value was taken – including clothes, shoes, a guitar, a tablet and a laptop.

“They took most of our belongings, which was all we could carry when we left Kyiv under the sounds of bombings,” she wrote.

“Whatever they left has blood all over it - apparently, they cut their hands while breaking the window.”

Olena said Gardaí have informed the couple that, without insurance, there is no way for them access compensation.

She said they have no way of accessing their insurance provider in Ukraine.

A garda spokesman said: “Gardaí in Ballymun are investigating an incident of theft from a car that occurred on the 24th of March 2022 at 4am in a hotel car park.”

“A window of the car was damaged and a number of items were taken,” he said.

No arrests have been made and the Garda investigation is ongoing.

Since launching the appeal 12 hours ago, the couple have raised more than €7,000 – more than double their original goal of €3,000.
