The number of homes that have been registered for the household charge has exceeded 1 million.

So far the amount raised through the controversial levy is just short of €99 million.

However it is estimated that somewhere between 600,000 and 800,000 households have yet to register.

Local authorities across the country are in the process of sending reminder notices to those who have yet to pay the €100 charge.

The Office for Local Authority Management says 1,014,585 properties were registered as of last Friday.
