An 18-year-old college freshman has been arrested after one person was killed and three others wounded in a shooting at a university in northern Arizona.

The shooting occurred at about 1.20am local time after "students became involved in a confrontation", Northern Arizona Police Chief GT Fowler said.

One student was killed and three others - all male - were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. The conditions of those hurt was not immediately made available.

Steven Jones was arrested without incident by the first officer to arrive at the scene on the Flagstaff campus, Chief Fowler told a news conference.

He could not confirm reports that the shooter had been subdued by other students.

The shooting took place in a car park near Mountain View Hall, a building which houses the university's fraternities and sororities.

Chief Fowler would not confirm whether any fraternities were involved in the shooting, saying only that it involved "student groups".

The college campus, which has around 25,000 students, was not placed on lockdown.

The university called the shooting an "isolated and unprecedented" incident and said classes will go on as planned on Friday.
