It is just hours to go until the official opening ceremony for London 2012.

Bells rang out across Britain earlier to mark the official start of the Games.

For 3 minutes church bells chimed across the UK and even Big Ben ‘bonged’ to celebrate the first day of the Olympics.

It kicks off a day of celebrations culminating in Queen Elizabeth II officially opening the games at a ceremony this evening.

But it has not all gone entirely to plan.

The UK Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt joined in with a handbell which fell apart as soon as he began shaking it.

There has been an embarrassing mix up at the archery event as hundreds of people thought they could get in for free but organisers say that was never the case.

Meanwhile several people due to work at a football venue in Newcastle have been arrested.

Officials say three staff are being questioned on suspicion of immigration offences.

But at the Irish training camp, things seem to be going well.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has been meeting with Team Ireland.

He says he has no doubt the Irish athletes will do us proud.

The event tonight titled ‘Isles of Wonder’ kicks off at 9pm.
