Barack Obama will make a rare prime-time address to the American people tonight to lay out his plans for tackling the threat from Islamic State militants.
The address comes as US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Baghdad to meet Iraq's new Prime Minister.
According to reports, President Obama is apparently prepared to use U.S. military airstrikes in Syria as part of an expanded campaign to defeat the Islamic State and does not believe he needs formal congressional approval to take that action.
