A nursing home in Co Donegal says it has 30 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Brindley Manor Nursing Home in east Donegal says it remains fully operation but is closed to non-essential visitors.

Nursing home management says all family members of residents have been contacted to inform them of the situation.

They said: "In line with Public Health protocols and guidelines, residents who have tested positive for the virus are isolating in their rooms.

"Our Director of Nursing is leading the care team at the nursing home and is working closely with Public Health and our Medical Director to ensure all appropriate measures are put in place to contain the virus."

They thanked staff for their "dedication, selfless efforts and tireless work".

Yesterday, 31 cases were confirmed among staff and residents in a nursing home in Co Laois.

Kilminchy Lodge Nursing Home in Portlaoise said 21 residents and 10 staff had tested positive.

Both the Donegal and Laois homes reporting outbreaks this week are part of the same nursing home group, Brindley Healthcare.

The group says they are separate outbreaks and are not linked.

The provider does have a number of other facilities around the country, but there are no confirmed cases at those sites.

Nursing home clusters

It comes amid growing concern over the level of coronavirus in a number of nursing homes across the country.

There were seven new clusters in nursing homes nationwide last week.

Diarmuid O'Dalaigh, owner of Oaklodge Nursing Home in Co Cork, told Newstalk Breakfast that the recent trends are very worrying.

He said: "I think we're extremely nervous, with the numbers rising and knowing the most vulnerable people in the country reside in nursing homes."

He said staff and management in homes across the country are doing their absolute best to keep the virus out, but just one person contracting the virus can lead to it spreading 'like wildfire'.
