A town councillor says locals in Co. Offaly are extremely shocked after shots were fired at a former Fianna Fail Councillor this morning.

Ger Killally escaped uninjured after a number of shots were fired at his car as he left his house in Shean just before 11am. He then drove a short distance away where he collided with a ditch and overturned his car.

Mr. Killally ran alongside former Taoiseach Brian Cowen in the 2002 General Election. His father and 2 children who were also in the car at the time received minor injuries.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of the townland between the hours of 9.30am and 10.40am this morning to contact Tullamore Garda Station.

They would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen the silver Volkswagen Passat overturn or anyone who observed the silver Astra car with the partial registration 06-D in the vicinity of Shean.

An incident room has been established at Tullamore. They can be contacted at 057-9327600. Anyone with information can also contact the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.

Councillor Fergus McDonnell from Edenderry Town Council served with Mr. Killally for 5 years.

He says people are really frightened after the incident.
